Admission requirements are: a Bachelor of Arts or equivalent in some discipline other than Anthropology and express the intention to continue working in their field. Prospective students should also manifest in their written statements how they see anthropology enhancing their capabilities in their chosen career. It is important that students have their goals clear and stated in advanced, for them to fully take advantage of the program. Furthermore, all applicants must take the GRE General Test.
Basic Information (Description):
The applied anthropology MA is designed for non-anthropology students who are already planning on entering varied fields such as medicine, education, journalism, law, environmental management, social services, rural development, or public policy evaluation and administration. The program will give students basic anthropological skills and training in an interdisciplinary context. Students in the program must complete a minimum of eight semester courses (32 credits), two of which may be taken outside of the Department of Anthropology. The program coordinator helps students in their first semester to pick their classes appropriately. Students must achieve an overall grade point average of 3.0 (B) in their course work. During their last semester students begin developing a topic for the required research paper. While it is possible for a full-time student to complete the program in two semesters, most students take three semesters to fulfill all the requirements and complete their final paper. Furthermore, MAAA candidates are required to show proficiency in French, Spanish, German, or another language approved by the student's advisor or the Graduate Committee. The final research paper should demonstrate the student’s ability to integrate anthropology with his or her own discipline. It should be done under the direction of the major adviser and two other faculty members (one may be from another department).
