Direct admission to the Robert H. Smith School of Business at College Park is offered on a space-available basis to first-time applicants who present the most competitive academic records. All students admitted as freshmen must demonstrate satisfactory progress (2.0 or better) plus completion of Gateway courses (BMGT 220, BMGT 230, ECON 200 or 201, and MATH 220 or 140--each with "C" or better) by the semester they reach 45 credits (excluding AP & ESL), at which time they will be reviewed in order to continue in the BMGT major.
Basic Information (Description):
The BA in Finance is designed to familiarize the student with the institutions, theory, and practice involved in the allocation of financial resources within the private sector, as well as to incorporate foundations in such related disciplines as economics and the quantitative areas. Finance provides an educational foundation for careers involving financial analysis and management, investment analysis and portfolio management, investment banking, insurance and risk management, banking, and international finance. Furthermore, the School has launched an innovative Undergraduate Fellows Program, which provides a broad range of opportunities to all undergraduate students to integrate knowledge gained in the classroom with real-world activities and hands-on applications in laboratories, internships and other action-based learning, as well as support the building of community among Smith students, faculty, staff, alumni and corporate partners. Candidates aspiring to complete the finance major, must fulfill the Economics Requirements (Money and Banking, and One of these three, ECON 305 Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory & Policy, ECON 306 Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, ECON 340 (formerly 440) International Economics; and Business Requirements (BMGT 343 – Investments, BMGT 440 - Financial Management, Three out of these, BMGT 443 - Security Analysis and Valuation, BMGT 444 - Futures Contracts and Options, BMGT 445 - Commercial Bank Management, BMGT 446 - International Finance, BMGT 447 - Internship in Research and Finance, BMGT 448 - Special Topics in Finance, and one out of these: BMGT 310 -Intermediate Accounting I, BMGT 3131 - Financial Statement Analysis, BMGT 332 – Operations Research for Management Decisions, BMGT 430 - Linear Statistical Models in Business, BMGT 434 - Introduction to Optimization Theory). These major requirements total 24 credits.
