Admision Requirements:
Application requirements are for prospective students to send in: A completed Application for Undergraduate Admission, the application fee, score from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). The CEEB (College Entrance Examination Board) code number for UMass Lowell is 3911. (UML, along with the other UMass campuses and Massachusetts state colleges, is reviewing the math and reading sections only of the SAT.), High school transcript, A personal essay addressing one of the following questions: How has the environment in which you were raised (your family, home, neighborhood or town) made you the person you are today? Write about an experience, interest, activity or challenge you have overcome, or any other topic that defines who you are as an individual and Topic of your choice. One letter of recommendation. You should ask someone who is familiar with your abilities and experience (such as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, employer, etc.) to provide this letter, A TOEFL/ELPT test score, if English is not your first language or if your method of instruction is not in English. High School Course Requirements include: 4 years of English, 2 years of social studies (including one year of U.S. history), 3 years of mathematics, 2 years of foreign language (in a single language), 3 years of science (2 with a lab) and, 2 years of electives. Students wishing to enter or transfer into criminal justice from another major or from another accredited Institution must present a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Basic Information (Description):
The Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and Criminology seeks to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the criminal justice system. Furthermore, students are simultaneously assured of receiving a traditional, well-rounded liberal arts education. Umass aims at the development of critical thinking, communication skills and the ability to conceptualize ideas is reflected in our curriculum, which also provides students with a balanced presentation of the issues of the field. The core curriculum focuses specifically on the following areas: Criminal justice and juvenile justice processes (law, crime and administration of justice), Criminology (the causes of crime and typologies), Law enforcement (police organization, discretion, subculture and legal constraints), Law adjudication (criminal law, prosecution, defense and court procedures, and decision-making), Corrections (incarceration, community-based corrections and treatment of offenders), Crime prevention (social, community, situational interventions and public policy), Research and evaluation (principles of social science research and policy evaluation) and, Technology and crime analysis. The department offers six degree concentrations: Police, Corrections, Violence, Research and Evaluation, Information and Technology, and Homeland Security. The Department uses either a three or six credit Practicum/Field Placement for upper level students as a mechanism for students to assess their interest and apply their classroom knowledge in an area of criminal justice.
