Admission criteria for the PhD program include: a degree from an accredited institution, comparable to the bachelor's degree offered at Berkeley; enough undergraduate training and research to take on graduate study. Prospective students must file a completed application (plus a $60 application fee) for admission, 2 official transcripts from all the colleges attended, 3 letters or recommendation, General GRE test results, and TOEFL or IELTS results if the applicant is an international student. Furthermore, Students will be required to be literate in at least one language of the African Diaspora, in connection with their area of concentration.
Basic Information (Description):
The PhD program at Berkeley is thought for students interested in advanced study and research in economics. The PhD is awarded in recognition of the student’s original scholarly contribution to the economics field. Students should prepare for the candidacy by taking two semesters of classes in econometrics, economic history, and fundamentals of micro and macro economic theory. During the next two years, students prepare for examination in two fields of specialization of their preference, prepare a dissertation prospectus, and take an oral examination. Once these steps are completed, students are put up for candidacy. The dissertation is to be based on original research and represent a contribution to the Economics discipline and knowledge. The process takes five years approximately, although some students take less time.
