Admision Requirements:
Admission decisions are based on an overall assessment of the primary and secondary factors, in addition to the student's academic interests. Primary factors consist of: a successful completion of a college preparatory curriculum (4 years of English, three years of math ( recommend taking four years of math, because a fourth year of math will enhance your admission application), a minimum of three years of science (recommend taking four years of science, because a fourth year of science will enhance your admission application), two years of a single second language, three years of social studies, one year of visual and/or performing arts), High school rank percentile. (Students from non-ranking schools and those with GED or other high school equivalency scores are given full consideration.), Grade point average, ACT or SAT scores, Strength of the curriculum through high school graduation, including courses that exceed the core subject requirements and any advanced courses (i.e. honors, AP, IB, college level). Secondary review factors: Evidence of exceptional achievement, aptitude, or personal accomplishment not reflected in the academic record or standardized test scores, a pattern of steady improvement in academic performance, Participation in extracurricular college preparatory programs, Evidence of exceptional talent or ability in artistic, scholarly, leadership, or athletic performance, Outstanding high school or community involvement, Size of graduating class, Work experience, paid or unpaid, Family attendance or employment at the University of Minnesota, First-generation college student, Evidence of exceptional motivation, maturity, or responsibility, Evidence of having overcome social, economic, or physical barriers to educational achievement, Evidence that enrollment would enhance the cultural, gender, age, economic, racial, or geographic diversity of the student body, and Extenuating circumstances. Students are required to take 5 courses in order to get admitted to the program in: Concepts in Visual Arts, Drawing, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Printmaking or Photography. They also need to submit a portfolio for faculty review.
Basic Information (Description):
The BFA in Art offers students in-depth instruction in the visual arts for student who would like to become professional artists. Students are required to take courses in a foreign language, in arts, cultural studies, Theory and Criticism, Aesthetics, Philosophy, among others.
