Admission to the University of Maryland is based on academic performance. The committee focuses on previous academic achievement and extracurricular activities to make a decision. Students must show that they have taken in high school, at least four units of English, two unit of Mathematics, three units of Social Sciences, two units of Physical Education, and electives. Students are also required to have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
Basic Information (Description):
The History Major highlights the fact that students can pick their courses and study what they are interested in within the history field. Students are required to take 39 hours of history coursework, of which 12 are core courses and the rest may be chosen by the student in coordination with her/his adviser. Students also pick an area of concentration in different geographical regions (e.g. Latin America, Middle East, etc.), chronological periods (ancient, medieval, modern, etc), or themes (science and technology, women and gender, religious, etc.). The major seems to be very tailor-made; this is a plus if the students have a particular interest, and not so much for those who are a little lost.
