The school looks for candidates with prior study of politics, economics, international affairs, foreign languages, or business, however other backgrounds are also considered candidates if they express academic interest in the discipline. Additionally, the program requires strong prior academic performance, high GRE scores, and glowing recommendations certainly. Nonetheless, the School takes a very holistic approach to selecting individual applicants and crafting the best possible class. The value added by life/work experience, cultural heritage, international region of origin or interest, may prove just as compelling. The common thread among successful applicants is a mix of intelligence, curiosity, and experience, passion, drive, and a strong commitment to an international career. Candidates should submit the following directly to the Patterson School: Patterson School Application and Application for Fellowship, A personal statement of purpose outlining interest, educational and career goals, Two to four letters of recommendation. Separate forms are not provided for recommendations; therefore, recommendations should be sent on school or company letterhead for this purpose, and A resume. Additionally they should submit the following directly to UK Graduate School: Graduate School Application form, Official GRE scores sent directly by ETS, Two official transcripts from all colleges attended (must be sent directly by the Registrar's office and not by applicant), Application fee ($40 domestic; $55 international), and TOEFL scores sent by ETS (only if your native language is not English and you attend an institution outside the United States). The school does not require admission interviews.
Basic Information (Description):
The Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce offers an interdisciplinary Masters of Arts degree designed to prepare students for international careers in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. The program of study totals 30 credit hours and can be completed in three semesters. Each student takes a core curriculum from courses in diplomacy, development, security, intelligence, international science and technology policy, and economic statecraft taught by the permanent Patterson School faculty. Beyond this core, students develop individualized courses of study that draw upon other University of Kentucky graduate departments. Students have chosen economics, finance, marketing, management, economics, history, political science, communications, sociology, geography, law, and public health. Most students also complete internships in career-related areas, in the United States or abroad. All students must successfully sit for comprehensive examinations (written and oral) before being awarded their masters degree. Courses and seminars are supplemented by a rich variety of co-curricular activities, ranging from a major fall conference (open to Patterson School students only) and spring crisis simulation to a rich speakers program, a film series and a formal protocol and etiquette dinner. Regardless of individual major and minor concentrations, all Patterson School students receive a general exposure to international commerce. This is accomplished not just through courses and special guest speakers, but also by periodic trips to headquarters, manufacturing and operations centers of major multinational corporations.
