Admission decisions are based on an overall assessment of the primary and secondary factors, in addition to the student's academic interests. Primary factors consist of: Successful completion of a college preparatory curriculum (4 years of English, three years of math ( recommend taking four years of math, because a fourth year of math will enhance your admission application), a minimum of three years of science (recommend taking four years of science, because a fourth year of science will enhance your admission application), two years of a single second language, three years of social studies, one year of visual and/or performing arts), High school rank percentile. (Students from non-ranking schools and those with GED or other high school equivalency scores are given full consideration.), Grade point average, ACT or SAT scores, Strength of the curriculum through high school graduation, including courses that exceed the core subject requirements and any advanced courses (i.e. honors, AP, IB, college level). Secondary review factors: Evidence of exceptional achievement, aptitude, or personal accomplishment not reflected in the academic record or standardized test scores, a pattern of steady improvement in academic performance, Participation in extracurricular college preparatory programs, Evidence of exceptional talent or ability in artistic, scholarly, leadership, or athletic performance, Outstanding high school or community involvement, Size of graduating class, Work experience, paid or unpaid, Family attendance or employment at the University of Minnesota, First-generation college student, Evidence of exceptional motivation, maturity, or responsibility, Evidence of having overcome social, economic, or physical barriers to educational achievement, Evidence that enrollment would enhance the cultural, gender, age, economic, racial, or geographic diversity of the student body, and Extenuating circumstances.
Basic Information (Description):
The BA in Theater Arts program serves over 250 majors, but also attracts students from the university at large. The Required Preparatory Courses are: TH 1101 Introduction to Theatre (4cr), TH 1321 Beginning Acting: Fundamentals of Performance (3cr), and TH 1322 Creating the Performance (3cr). Major requirements include: TH 3100 Theatre Practicum (1credit each, 4 credits total, S/N only, up to 2 may be in acting), TH 3171 Theatre History (3cr), TH 3172 Theatre History (3cr), TH 3513 Theatre Design and Technology I (4cr including Lab), TH 3515 Theatre Design and Technology II (4cr including Lab), TH 4177 *or* 4178 Survey of Dramatic Lit I or II (3cr), TH 4901 Senior Seminar (2cr -S/N only). Additionally, 10 elective credits in upper division (3xxx, 4xxx, or 5xxx) theatre or dance courses are required for completion of the degree in Theatre Arts. On the intermediate and advanced levels the curriculum offers classes in directing, Stanislavski, physical theatre techniques, puppetry, musical theatre and storytelling. Our design and technology classes offer a balanced approach between traditional design craftsmanship and high technology. Students investigate scenic art, costume construction, and lighting design, but also have the opportunity to explore digital video and audio, editing and post-production for video and film, as well as multimedia production for live performance. Furthermore, not only do students learn the process of creation in a class setting, but they also have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice onstage in a wide variety of productions.
