The Admissions Committee at Swarthmore evaluates the student’s class ranking, standardized tests, extracurricular activities, essays included in the application, recommendation letters from two teachers and one from a counselor, and an interview to admit students.
Basic Information (Description):
The Dance Program focuses on cross-cultural study; it concentrates on Africa/African Diaspora, Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America. Students study composition, theory, and history in an integrated manner, understanding dance intellectually and artistically. The curriculum is designed in such a way so as to provide students with dance experiences from multiple perspectives. Courses always related to other areas of the arts and make an attempt at putting many disciplines in conversation. Students are required to take courses in composition (the crafting of movement in relation to emotional content, space, time, and energetic dynamics); History/Theory (introductory, advanced, and individual projects); repertory (gaining dance vocabulary and approaches through performance); technique (understanding of specific vocabulary such as African, Ballet, Contact, Improvisation, Flamenco, Modern, Taiko, Tap, and Kathak.
