Basic Information (Description):
Meteorology requires extensive preparation in mathematics and physics, for this reason it is important that the appropriate and required preparatory basic courses be taken in the first two years. The BS in Meteorology requires 120 semester hours: 36 in the Liberal Arts (including the 6 and 7 credits required in math and science respectively); 12 in foreign language; weathercasting (MET 3940); 21 hours of Mathematics; 4 hours of chemistry; 10 hours of physics; 35 hours of meteorology; and 14 hours of electives. Students who would like to work for the Federal Government should take MET4400C Meteorological Instruments and Observations (3 credits) and/or GLY4820 Physical Hydrology (3 credits). Those interested in a career in broadcasting, should take as soon as possible, MET3940 Weathercasting (1 credit) and classes in the communications department that fit their schedule and can be useful. Finally those students thinking about graduate school should take additional physical science classes, such as Modern Physics (PHY 3101, 3 credits) and General Chemistry II (CHM 1046C, 4 credits).
