Admision Requirements:
Harvard Graduate School accepts application from those students holding a BA or equivalent with outstanding records. Faculty recommendation letters, personal statements (outlining the student’s goals for graduate study), research papers, publications, and such are carefully taken into account by the Admissions Committee. Furthermore, General GRE test scores as well as GRE Subject test (in some cases) are required. There is only admission for the fall term.
Basic Information (Description):
The PhD program in Government and Social Policy or Sociology and Social Policy, provides students a thorough theoretical approach in one of these disciplines and then moves the student into inter-disciplinary studies at the Kennedy School of Government. This degree is designed for students with an interest in economic and educational inequality, segregation, poverty, changes in the family structure, immigration, labor and race market segmentation, and historical and comparative social policy; with the objective of creating policy responses to these social problems. Students are expected to complete all required courses, seminars, and proseminars to prepare original research papers that serve as qualifying papers (in sociology) or research papers (in government). All the necessary classes and seminars are usually completed by the end of the third year in residence. The final draft of the dissertation is evaluated during a public oral defense before the committee. Courses required for the Sociology and Social Policy PhD are two-term sequence in classical and contemporary theory and two-term sequence in quantitative and qualitative methods, and one advanced course in quantitative methods. After these, students must take the Sociology General Examination. Once the Exam is passed, all students must complete 14 term courses at the 200 level with a B or better. For the Government and Social Policy PhD requirements are twelve half-courses, of which eight must be in government. At least ten of these 12 half-courses and seven of the eight half-courses in government must be 1000- or 2000-level courses. Students must also complete two out of the three terms of the Proseminar in Social Policy and three seminar style research papers, one of which covers a topical area with major literatures in government and social policy. Additionally, students must be competent in one language other than English and complete one course in quantitative methods with a grade of B or better. Students must also take the Government General Examination, and after it comple of third term in Social Policy Proseminar.
