Despite the fact that the median scores of admitted students on the verbal and mathematical portions of the SAT generally fall in the mid 700s, and ACT composites in the low 30s, a distinguished high school performance is more important than tests. The Admissions Committee also considers motivation, curiosity, energy, leadership ability, and distinctive talent. The personal essay, as well as evaluations by a counselor and two teachers, provide a great deal of insight into these qualities. We hope to find students who have been committed to their school or community. Diversity in the student body is also important to form a well-rounded freshmen class with those students with exceptional qualities.
Basic Information (Description):
The Sociology Program offers students the opportunity to study the theoretical and empirical foundations of how societies work and how they change over time. The program focuses on: social construction of groups and identities, evolution of culture, inter subjective meanings, social norms, interaction, hierarchies, and inter-group relationships; all of these resulting in individual human behavior and group behavior with different consequences. The program also offers three research centers: Comparative and Historical Sociology, Cultural Sociology and Social Theory, and Social Stratification and Life Course Research. Faculty also specialize in: Gender and Sexuality, political Sociology, Sociology and Religion, Economic Sociology, Urban Sociology and Ethnography, and Chinese Society. The Department offers two programs leading to the BA: the standard program, a rigorous sociology-only program; or the combined program, sociology and another subject. The program also offers an intensive major, for those students interested in sociological research and in continuing in it in Graduate School. The program is very complete, very detailed, and focuses on the main sociological components, covering the core aspects as well as catering for the student’s specific interests.
